Keeping it traditional

Traditions at Martin remain but evolve over the years

Homecoming, Martin Idol, and Mr. MHS are just a few examples of what makes Martin so extraordinary. These traditions are unique to Mar- tin and hold a significant impact on faculty and students. Martin students and staff have certain traditions that they favor more than others because it gives them a chance to express them- selves. “I love Homecoming sea- son and all the dress up days,” junior Corrina Reyes said. Some students want new things every year and possible revisions to traditions Martin already has. “New things every year would be cool, kind of like the Homecoming dance this year,” Reyes said. Many students also said that adding new traditions and events could be awe- some for Martin. “More inclusive shows for the arts would be fun,” junior Priya Grant said. “Maybe like a poetry night or something like that.” Traditions at Martin have also transformed and grown throughout the years. “The headdress mascot has changed from that to the Rockin M,” counselor Susan Kingen said. A lot of new traditions have developed and have brought the Martin family closer together. “The Special Olympics Prom is a new one I love.” Kingen said. “It’s some- thing that helps bring us together and it’s all about taking care and caring about other people.” Traditions here at Mar- tin tend to normally begin with the students finding a sponsor then making that club and transforming it into a family. “Usually it starts with stu- dents,” Kingen said. “Then they make it their own and that usually starts traditions.” Traditions unique to clubs or classes can help to bring the club together and make them better at whatever it is they do. “Orchestra does scaveger hunts and parties that help us bond,” Reyes said. “It makes us sound better and helps build the connection and chemistry.”
